Step Up provides its three pillars of support for Veteran members through its Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.
The VASH program currently serves more than 200 Veterans. The VASH team helps Los Angeles Veterans move from the streets, shelters, and transitional housing into permanent supportive housing. They provide Veterans with street outreach, engagement, help with benefits enrollment, and making appointments with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), and through this process a trusted partnership develops. Once housed, the Step Up VASH team then continues to provide supportive mental and physical health services and life skills programs for Veterans in “scattered site” units and in each of its Step Up communities in Santa Monica, Hollywood and on-site at Building 209 on the West LA VA campus.
In July of 2017, 54 of these Veterans moved into Building 209, Step Up’s permanent supportive housing development on the West LA VA Campus. VASH has a team of staff working directly with the Veterans from an office in the same building to support their transition from the streets to a permanent home.
