SAN BERNARDINO VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MYLEE’S THANK YOU CARDS

In San Bernardino, Step Up staff receive thank you cards. Pictured are SC1 Jason Duran, Nurse Sara Grilltsch and SC1 Denise Magallanes.

A few months ago, the Step Up Virtual Volunteers started making Thank You Cards as a way of acknowledging staff working during COVID-19. These beautiful and creative handmade cards were made by virtual volunteer Mylee for the San Bernardino staff.  Mylee is a high school student living in San Bernardino County and heard about Step Up while looking for ways to volunteer in the pandemic.  She explains, “What stuck out about you guys is that you help people experiencing homelessness.  I have family members experiencing homeless and see it all around me in my community. It’s a big issue here. So, what motivates me to volunteer is being able to serve my community and help others who are going through a hard time.”

The San Bernardino team members were thrilled to receive the cards and were moved by Mylee’s kind gesture.  We asked them to share a little bit about what they do and how they’re taking care of themselves during this time.

KIMBERLY WILLIAMS
I am the Assistant Program Manager in the SBC Housing department. I manage a team of Resident Support Coordinators, we support our members in finding housing, getting housed (lease signings) and maintaining their housing (eviction prevention/landlord mediation). Self-care to me is very important. I belong to a support group and I attend a Zoom meeting for an hour every morning before I start work. I try to also meditate on a daily basis and write a daily gratitude list.

ERICA KHAMVONGSA
I am a Service Coordinator II (SCII).  I am a marriage, family associate therapist that gets to help our members in their journey in life. I am also very involved with our member’s clinical case management. After a stressful day, I work out after work. For my selfcare I go hiking during the week in the evening with different friends and my husband. For my selfcare during the weekend, I go jet skiing and boogie boarding. When I’m on and in the water, I’m in my flow and COVID-19, work and bills disappear from my mind.

TERRALE RIMBOW
Hi I am a Resident Support Coordinator (RSC1) I work in SBC Housing Department. One of the many hats I wear is to ensure that I find housing for our members, and once they are housed, work with the members to maintain their unit. For self-care, when I am working from home I try and wake up early enough to have a cup of coffee and have a few slices of bacon. When it starts becoming overwhelming, I get in the pool and relax and try and take my mind off things. When I am out in the field, I will stop by Jamba Juice and grab a Watermelon Splash, turn my music up and enjoy the vibe.
