Housing = Healthcare! Research has shown the total healthcare costs for clients moving from chronic homelessness to supportive housing are 72% lower than those of individuals still experiencing homelessness. Step Up is very excited to partner with Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) to provide move-in items for residents of its newest permanent supportive housing community, the Kaufmann Apartments at Step Up on Colorado. “Step Up typically looks to HUD to provide Section 8 housing vouchers, or Shelter Plus Care housing vouchers for its residents.” said Steven Spielberg, Program Manager for all of Step Up’s Housing efforts. “It is such an important upfront support that DHS is providing for the basic practical supplies needed by individuals making the initial move from the streets to permanent supportive housing.” Move–In items the DHS funds provide include the necessities of daily living: bedding, lamps, laundry and cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, cutlery, cookware, storage bins, trash cans, and small appliances. The Kaufmann Apartments at Step Up on Colorado is slated to open in July and will end chronic homelessness for 32 individuals experiencing mental health issues in Santa Monica. The “Welcome Home!”  Campaign will ensure that housing, vocational opportunities, and supportive services are always available for members of Step Up and Daniel’s Places. Please help make the “Welcome Home!”   Campaign a success today! Click the Ways to Give button before June 30th and it will double!
